Hello everyone and welcome to our February newsletter.

As we start moving towards the end of winter, February brings a special opportunity to show some extra love to our four-legged companions. In fact February is a busy month, not only is it National Pet Dental Health Month but it is also National Cat Health Month, and that’s all before you add Valentine’s Day into the mix. So whether it’s a reminder to check in on our feline friends and their health or a chance to celebrate Valentine’s Day with our pets, there’s plenty to think about in February!

In this issue of the newsletter we’re diving into some important dental health tips. As you will know for yourself, oral health is a really important part of our overall health. Alongside this we have some exciting updates about the practice too so please do read on to find out more.

Let’s keep our pets healthy, happy and loved this February.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month!

Just like us, pets need regular dental care to help them keep their teeth and gums healthy. With February being National Pet Dental Health Month, it’s the perfect time to focus on your furry friend’s smile!

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in pets, but by following a few simple steps we can slow it down or even prevent it.

Here are a few tips to keep your pet’s teeth in tip-top shape:

Brushing is key: Regular teeth brushing with a pet-safe, enzymatic toothpaste is the best way to prevent plaque buildup. While it may sound like a chore, brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective way to prevent dental disease. Aim to brush your pet's teeth at least 2-3 times a week. Use a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste (never use human toothpaste as it contains ingredients that are harmful to pets). Don’t be afraid to start slowly whilst your pet is getting used to having this done and make sure it is a positive experience for them by rewarding them with treats and praise!

Dental chews and toys: There are many dental chews and toys available that are specifically designed to help scrape any loose plaque off your pet’s teeth before it can firmly bind to the surface and cause problems further down the line. These products can be a great addition to your pet’s daily routine and can make a big difference in keeping their teeth clean between professional cleanings. Be sure to choose products that are approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) for best results.

Dental supplements: Products such as Nutraplaque, which comes as a sprinkle capsule is really easy to add to food and acts as a natural plaque remover for dogs and cats.  Its scientifically proven formula helps aid your pet’s oral health and hygiene by systemically working against bad breath, tartar & plaque for healthy teeth and gums. It works really well alongside chews and toys as it also helps reduce the plaque’s ability to stick to their teeth.

Annual dental examination: Some breeds can be more prone to dental issues than others and as such even with the best regular at-home care, professional dental cleanings can still be necessary from time to time. Whilst they are under anaesthetic during a professional dental exam it is easier to fully check all areas of their mouth including those which can be difficult to fully assess when they are awake. This way we can have the closest check for any early signs of dental disease. During their treatment we can thoroughly clean your pet’s teeth, if necessary take x-rays to check for any underlying issues beneath the gumline which may indicate a tooth needing to come out. An annual dental examination is a key part of your pet’s overall health routine.

Nutrition: Just like us, a healthy diet can promote good dental health. Look for high-quality pet food that helps prevent buildup, or consider adding wet food or dental-specific kibble to your pet’s meals. Always check for ingredients that support healthy teeth and gums.

The Woodbridge Pet Club Members

Knowing the full importance of good dental health, we decided to include a discount for dental treatment as an extra perk to joining our Pet Club. Members will automatically receive a 10% discount on dental treatment, whether it is simply a routine scale and polish that’s needed to refresh a healthy smile or if there are any teeth which need to be extracted, you will still be entitled to the savings.

National Cat Health Month

This February we are celebrating National Cat Health Month - a perfect reminder to check our cats and ensure they are living their healthiest, happiest lives. Cats can be incredibly stoic and often hide signs of illness, so it’s essential to stay proactive with their care and pay close attention to their physical and emotional well-being, keeping an eye out for any changes to their normal behavioural patterns.

Whether you are a lifelong cat lover or a new pet parent, this month is the perfect time to review your cat’s health routine and make sure they are getting all the care they need and deserve.

Nutrition and weight management

Obesity is a common issue for cats and can lead to several other health problems, such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. Make sure you are feeding your cat a high-quality, balanced diet, and be mindful of portion sizes.

Mental and physical stimulation

Cats are curious creatures that need mental and physical stimulation. Providing plenty of toys, scratching pods, and climbing spaces can all help to keep your cat occupied and engaged. If you have an indoor cat, consider setting up a window perch or introducing interactive toys that challenge their hunting instincts from the safety of your home. Regular playtime is great for their overall health and happiness!

Dental health care

Just like dogs, cats need regular dental care too! Dental disease is common in cats too and can lead to pain, difficulty eating, and more severe infections. Regular brushing, dental chews, and an annual professional dental scale and polish can help keep your cat’s teeth and gums in top condition.

Our new extension is complete!

We are thrilled to announce that the building work for the new extension to the practice is now complete! The new extension has 4 main purposes, the first of these is adding two further consult rooms. The second priority was to have a dedicated dental suite equipped with dental x-ray. We have also been able to re-purpose our existing kennel space into a quarantine area for infectious patients and a dedicated cat kennel room whilst also adding additional kennels for all sizes of dogs.

Saving the best for last, arguably the most exciting component of the extension is the additional surgical theatre with its own specialist equipment.

These improvements will not only allow us to increase the number of consultation slots available each day, but they will also help us accommodate more inpatients during busier periods. We’re also excited to once again be able to offer a quiet corner of reception for our feline patients.

We can’t wait to share more with you from the new extension very soon!
